As more and more sensors are used to measure our environment Energy Harvesting becomes an important alternative to batteries. As it allows to convert energy like waste heat from the environment to electric energy, Energy Harvesting allows to wirelessly collect sensor data at difficult to reach places and is a favorable option to battery displacement.
In my work I search for new concepts how to use ferro- and metamagnetic shape memory alloys (SMA) for Energy Harvesting. Because of their multifunctional properties, they allow for completely new, integrated approaches. This is possible because of several effects intrinsic to the material, e.g., Shape Memory Effect (change of force ∆F) and temperature dependent magnetization (∆M). Combining these effects, an actuator build from magnetic shape memory alloys allows for miniaturization and a very compact structure.
