Frieder Maerkle studied Physics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and Uppsala University, Sweden. He wrote his diploma thesis at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg.

As a PhD he is now working on new laser based methods to produce micrometer scale molecular arrays.
