Scanner/english

In Room 334 there is a PC with a DIN A4 color scanner (Epson Perfection 1670) connected and freely accessible for IMT employees.

The Scanner-PC may only be used for scanning, so please do not install any other programs! And please don't change the screen properties!

Normally this PC should be off. When you switch on the PC, monitor and scanner are also switched on automatically. You can log in with your normal username and password.

Please shut down the PC after scanning.

The local directories of the Scan PC are not accessible over the network, so you need to store your files on J:\Transfer or your U-drive so that you can access them later from your office PC.

Note that with this scanner, the originals must be placed so that the top edge of the document is facing forward!

Please use the Adobe Photoshop program for scanning. The scanning process is started via Datei --> Importieren --> Epson Perfection 1670.... This starts the Epson Scan program.

By default, the scan program is started in Professional mode, as this is the most flexible and allows most settings. First you should start a preview scan, so that you can see the current image in the preview window. Afterwards, you should select the section to be scanned with the mouse. Here you can also let the section be determined automatically by clicking on the symbol with the green square and the hatched triangles in the frame area of the preview window. Afterwards you can move the frame with the mouse or change its size.

The following settings for the scan program are recommended:

Bildtyp: 24 bit color (for color scans) / 8 bit grayscale (for b/w scans)
48 bit color and 16 bit grayscale scans allow for higher quality scans. However, such files can only be processed with a few programs (e. g. Photoshop). These types of images are rarely really necessary!

Auflösung: 200 dpi
Since all printers require at least 4x4 pixels to display grayscale or colors by dithering, a resolution of 200dpi is normally sufficient for a normal printer. This specification is the scan resolution only if the target size is equal to the original size (see next point)!

Zielgröße: Allows you to specify the desired output size of the scanned image. The actual scanning resolution is then automatically selected so that the scanned image will have the desired size and resolution (recommended: 200 dpi).

In the Korrekturen section, you can have color or brightness corrections carried out during the scanning process. However, it is recommended to make such corrections - if necessary - afterwards in Photoshop, because you have much more possibilities here.

With Scannen you start the actual scanning process. When the image is completely scanned, the scanned image appears in a editing window in Photoshop. You can then scan in another image. If this is not desired, you have to close the scan program before you can continue working with Photoshop. Save the scanned images in Photoshop to your J:\Transfer folder or to your U-drive with Datei -> Speichern unter. Make sure that you select JPEG for color images and PCX for black and white images. By default, Photoshop automatically saves in its own Photoshop format so that you won't be able to open it in other programs.

Below are the most important tips for image editing in Photoshop. Please always leave the printed instructions at their place on the table next to the scanner!

The basic features of Photoshop:

Freistellungswerkzeug: Crop the image. You will find the tool icon (2 nested right angles) as the 3rd symbol from the top left of the toolbar. You can then use the mouse to pull up the section and then right-click into the drawn rectangle to select cropping.

The most important tasks for image correction are hidden under Bild -> Einstellungen.

Bild -> Einstellungen -> Tonwertkorrektur: Moving the sliders left and right directly underneath the displayed tonal value histogram allows you to make better use of the contrast range. The changes in the image are displayed online, so that you can see the effect well. With the slider in the middle you can lighten dark mid tones or darken them too brightly. Often a click on the Auto button will produce quite a decent result.

Bild -> Einstellungen -> Arbeitsfläche drehen: Rotates the image, either by fixed amounts or by entering any value to be entered. If you press the left mouse button for a short time on the pipette symbol in the lower right half of the toolbar and then select Messwerkzeug in the pop-up menu, you can then subsequently drwa a line in the image with the mouse button pressed down. If you then enter "Arbeitsfläche drehen", the angle is already defined as the value required to rotate this line to the nearest X or Y axis. With this you can easily straighten twisted images during scanning!
